In fact, everything then was very smooth. Astronomers can find no differences between different parts of the background radiation that are greater than one part in ten thousand. However, it couldn’t have been absolutely smooth, otherwise the universe wouldn’t have been able eventually to become lumpy with stars and galaxies. There must have been little variations, seeds from which structure was later to grow. The satellite’s instruments had discovered just such ripples in this smooth background.
